Welcome to Organized Sports!

Our family has just entered the world of organized sports as our 3rd grade daughter joined a local basketball league. I always felt some hesitation about signing our daughter up for a sport. What would she think? Would she be intimidated? Would she get to know the other kids? What would she think of losing and winning? Or what if they didn’t keep score – would she be frustrated by the lack of an official “winner”.

Lessons from Spring Break

Bringing Play Home

Recently, my boys and I had a chance to spend the afternoon at the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum! What a fun time we had! My boys found a station using wood boards with notches cut into them to create a house/fort. Thirty minutes later, I finally convinced them there were other places worth exploring.

I recently read a parenting magazine that shared this fact: According to a survey of 35,000 children completed by the National Literacy Trust, children who talk to their parents or others over meal times are better communicators than those who don’t.

It Takes a Village

Our daughter’s principal recently wrote in a newsletter his agreement with the phrase “It takes a village to raise a child.” He mentioned the grandparents, teachers, babysitters, neighbors and friends who all impact the lives of our children. I’ve been thinking more about this concept.
